The Leavell Foundation (TLF) is proud to announce Abby’s Road! This is TLF’s inaugural fundraiser, in Abby’s honor, who is an adorable 14-year-old girl. Her journey has led her to Denver, Colorado. Because of Rhino Scoliosis Center’s reputation of success with difficult scoliosis cases, she and her parents have sought care at Rhino with Dr. Jane Leavell. The Rhino team has been delighted to work with such a delightful and optimistic young lady! She inspires others to work as hard as she does, and to have hope for the future.
Abby has a severe scoliosis, which has created many problems for her.She has had difficulty being as active as the other kids her age, getting winded at climbing just one flight of stairs. She is in desperate need of ongoing treatment for her scoliosis so that her improvements, for which she has worked so hard, may be maintained, and further correction achieved.
Abby now can be seen running (literally!) around the center, out-racing even the fastest of us. She has doubled her lung capacity during her treatment here at RSC, happily helping to create “blow games”, which are types of games that help increase lung capacity. One of her favorites is “blow golf” where a ping pong ball serves as the golf ball, with her lungs substituting as a golf club. Cups are placed along a path, and the ball must circumvent these on its way toward the end “hole”. She’s always looking for new golf partners!
More than all the personal gains that she has achieved, perhaps her most valuable contribution is the hope that she inspires in others with her words of encouragement and her bubbly personality. We hope all of you get to meet Abby, but whether you do or not, you all will probably be touched by her story. Dr. Leavell certainly has been. Abby has a need for extensive care in the face of an economically difficult situation. This has inspired Dr. Leavell to form an organization that she has dreamed about for many years now: The Leavell Foundation. It’s purpose is to help children in situations like Abby’s to afford the care they desperately need.
